Our Mission

Safe, inclusive homes for those who need them most.

Jane's Shared Housing Foundation was founded in November 2022 by George Knowlton III to honor the memory of his wife, Jane Knowlton — who believed that stable, sustainable housing should never depend on luck or circumstance.

We create welcoming shared living spaces for adults and youth who benefit from communal support — offering not just a roof, but a community, life-skills coaching, and a real path forward.

Every decision runs through the SMILE Philosophy: Safe. Moral. Inclusive. Linguistically clear. Rich in Experiential value.

Taylor Rose Knowlton
In loving memory · October 21
"She had a natural way of caring for others, offering comfort through small, quiet gestures that carried deep meaning. A kind smile when someone felt left out. A gentle word when a friend was hurting."

In a meaningful twist of fate, both Jane and Taylor shared the same birthday — October 21st — a quiet reminder of the light they brought into the world.

Life is a Battle and We Will Win.

Jane's Shared Housing Foundation is proud to partner with board-certified pediatrician and award-winning author Dr. Jasmine Zapata, MD, MPH — founder of Motivational M.D. Enterprises — and the We Will Win book movement.

George Knowlton III is a featured co-author in Volume II, listed "in loving memory of daughter Taylor Rose." His chapter raises awareness about youth mental health and suicide prevention.

Why This Mission Is Urgent — NAMI Data

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people ages 10–24 in the United States.

In 2023, 20% of U.S. high school students had serious thoughts of suicide — more than 1 in 5 seriously considered attempting it.

"If this movement helps save even one life, it will be worth it." — Dr. Jasmine Zapata, MD, MPH

Dr. Zapata began this mission while training as a pediatrician, after watching children arrive in the ICU in crisis following suicide attempts. That experience called her to reach young people before they ever get there. She has since led two national tours reaching 2,000+ youth, with books translated into Swahili and Korean.

Partnership note: Donations through JSHF are tax-deductible under our 501(c)(3) status (EIN 88-4290321). Direct sponsorships with Motivational M.D. Enterprises (an LLC) are business partnerships — consult your tax advisor.

The Heart Behind It All

Built on love, loss, and a lifetime of service.

George's journey of service started when he was just ten years old, volunteering with Special Olympics. Even then, he saw how a simple act of kindness could change someone's day. As he grew, he kept showing up — latch-key programs, youth sports coaching, mission projects locally and around the world.

That belief grew into the SMILE Philosophy — creating solutions that are Safe, Moral, Inclusive, clear in their Language, and rich in Experiential value.

"When I lost Jane, I wanted to honor the way she lived. She believed stable, sustainable housing should never depend on luck or circumstance. To carry that belief forward, I founded Jane's Shared Housing Foundation."

That same heart continues through Taylor's House — created in loving memory of George's daughter, Taylor Rose Knowlton. Both Jane and Taylor shared the same birthday, October 21st, a quiet reminder of the light they brought into the world.

Today, George carries their story forward as a co-author of Life is a Battle and We Will Win (Vol. II) — sharing Taylor's story with 50,000 young people across the country.

Five values. One way of living, building, and caring for people. Every decision at Jane's Shared Housing Foundation runs through this standard.

  • S

    Safety

Well-maintained homes with clear security protocols. Every resident deserves to feel physically and emotionally safe.

  • M

    Morality

We do the right thing, even when it costs us. Our word is our bond — to residents, donors, and the community.

  • I

    Inclusivity

Welcoming environments that respect every resident's dignity. No person is turned away for who they are.

  • L

    Linguistic Clarity

Transparent, plain-language communication with residents, partners, and donors. Say it simply. Make sure it lands.

  • E

    Experiential Value

Every program, event, and interaction should feel worth more than it costs. That's the joy and community part.

Shared housing means multiple adults living together in a home, sharing common areas while maintaining private spaces. It is one of the most effective and affordable housing models for vulnerable populations — reducing cost per resident, creating built-in community and accountability, and allowing support services to reach more people. For individuals in recovery, youth in crisis, or adults with disabilities, shared housing is often the difference between stability and homelessness.
